Former straight-A Stephen Decatur High School student
turned local rock hero Phil Ritchie made his national television
debut this week on the CBS reality series “Rock Star: Supernova,”
with a chance of a lifetime on the line to serve as front man for
some of the industry’s heavyweights.
Ritchie, the energetic front man for the local rock band Lennex,
was chosen as one of 16 finalists to compete for the lead spot in
a band called Supernova, which will include Motley Crue drummer
Tommy Lee, Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, and Guns and Roses guitarist
Gilby Clarke. Should Ritchie emerge as the winner in the CBS reality
series, he will perform as the front man for Supernova in several
concerts and on an album to be produced.
Ritchie was born in Shadyside, Md. in 1978 and moved several times
as a child before landing in the Ocean City at a young age. He attended
Stephen Decatur and nurtured his musical talent in a wide variety
of disciplines before gravitating toward rock. He was a marching
band member and drum major and jazz band member before forming the
group Lennex, which was initially called Kiss Me Kate, with some
of his classmates.
Ritchie and Lennex cut their teeth playing in local clubs around
the resort area before making it to the national stage. After a
wildly successful local run, Lennex attracted national attention
and has since toured with the likes of Bon Jovi, the Goo Goo Dolls,
Fuel and Cake, among others.
Ritchie is known as much for his achievements in the classroom
as on the stage, said he chose to pursue a career in rock rather
than follow other pursuits.
“I was a straight A student in high school and a chemistry major
in college, so I could probably be doing something else right now,
something making $100,000 a year,” he said. “But I decided I didn’t
want to be a white collar guy pushing a pencil.”
Ritchie said he was honored to be chosen as a finalist for “Rock
Star” and has every intention of making the best of the opportunity.
“I just have this feeling in my gut that I was meant to do this,”
he said. “I’m extremely comfortable on a stage. It’s where I’m at
my most comfortable. It’s my home.”
Rock Star: Supernova premiered on CBS on Wednesday night with initial
performances by each of the candidates. Ritchie performed “Cult
of Personality” by Living Color and got mixed initial reviews.
“That was kind of a crazy song choice for you,” said Tommy Lee.
“It was well done, though, and I like you.”
